A healthy hot chocolate

I’m freaking cold! It’s like minus a thousand here in Toronto!  Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the picture, I don’t love the cold. But I do love a good, healthy hot chocolate. Is there such a thing you ask? Well, thanks to my beautiful friend Julie Daniluk, there is and I am sharing it with you here. If you don’t know Julie, please do check her out, she’s got two amazing books on how to heal the gut and internal inflammation, there is no one I know who is more educated and knowledge on how to eat well and stay healthy.

This recipes has no refined sugar (yes!) and no other preserved nasties either.

All of the ingredients are packed with nutrients and vitamins the body need to thrive and did I mention it tastes AAAAMAYZING too!

Do you remember a few years ago when the Dairy Farmers of Canada were touting chocolate milk as the perfect go-to post workout drink? This campaign not only got Canadians drinking more milk (to my horror) it also did a really good job at irritating the crap out of me. Why do you ask? I’ll save that for anther post (coming soon) on milk and why you need to cut it out of your diet asap.

Coconut butter and cocoa powder make this creamy, chocolaty treat a great workout drink that will be beneficial before or after your workout. Cocoa powder contains caffeine which has been shown to delay the onset of muscle fatigue by helping the body use its fat stores as energy instead of stored glycogen in the liver. The longer you conserve glycogen, the longer your muscles can function. Coconut butter is high in medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are rapidly absorbed by the body and immediately converted into fuel for the organs and muscles to use during a workout. After a workout is also a good time for a treat like this because the body is primed to absorb these calories and use them to replace the glycogen in the liver.

Love the fact that this is Egg Free, Soy Free, Dairy Free, Wheat Free and raw!

Instructions
  1. Place coconut beverage in a medium pot and heat until hot but not boiling.
  2. Add remaining ingredients to a blender, finishing with hot coconut beverage, and blend until well combined.

If not using the sweet superfoods listed, be sure to add the extra honey, or taste and adjust sweetness to personal preference.
